When things just started to be falling into place, Catamount experienced a radical change when NASCAR pulled out after failing to see eye to eye with Tom Curley. As the Northern NASCAR pulled out, taking with it the familiar metal - bodied late models that had scored such a hit for years, Catamount and its sister tracks had to replace the cars and the several top name drivers that remained loyal to Daytona and went away with the sanctioning body and its cars.
What was found as a replacement was the ASA - style partially - fiberglass bodied Pony cars - most particularly Camaros. Those late model teams that had chosen to stay with Curley and Catamount found themselves having to sell off their NASCAR - legal equipment and re-fit themselves with the smaller cars tht had been made famous by builders like Ed Howe and drivers like Butch Miller. A few teams came in to take the places of the departed Bob Dragons, Stub Faddens, and others, but some of the magic was gone.

Curley had managed to retain the lions' share of his stars: Beaver Dragon, Robbie Crouch, Claude LeClerc, Jean-Paul Cabana, Dave Dion [part-time], Gardiner Leavitt, Jamie Aube, Kevin Lepage and the E.J. Prescott team, and more. They would be supplemented with a few drivers from Maine, and Paul Richardson and Jack Bateman, from Massachusetts. Towards the end of Catamount's history, the door would be open. In it, would come teams such as Junior Hanley and Russ Urlin; out, would go Crouch, Aube, Dion, and Barney McRae. Sadly, the last track record for the fastest lap would belong to Urlin, an unfamiliar invader from Ontario.
