Mettowee Speedway was located on the Wilson farm in North Granville, NY. It shared competitors with such venues as Stateline Speedway, No. Bennington, VT; Pico Raceway, Rutland, VT; Fairmont Raceway, Fair Haven, VT., Adirondack Speedway, West Glens Falls, NY., Warrensburgh Speedway, Warrensburgh, NY; and more. At this time, well before this time, and for many seasons after this time, Steve Danish was one of the alphamales of that pack of shared competitors. Older than many of his competitors, he was often just called "Mr. Danish".

It was my honor to meet with Steve Danish, a hero of mine and ride with him in his small airplane around 1983. Danish still holds the record for most wins in a season at Fonda Speedway [which, incidentally he accomplished in this same 1953]. Of some of the other names in the article: Hank Schmidt raced for years and became a track official for C.J. Richards; Jerry King raced for years and also was a successful car owner in the Rutland, VT area; and Wally LaBelle was a big winner at his hometown Adirondack Speedway, as well as at Whites Beach, Warrensburgh, Fairmont, and more.

Steve Danish - during this era.
Bob Mott is best known as the owner and builder of that speedway '34 Ford coupe 3NY which Jeep Herbert and Pete Corey drove. Mott, himself, was the car's first driver. I actually remember Jeep in the car at Pico in 1952. George Rogers was an ace driver and expert welder. He won races from 1950 all the way to 1967 at Devil's Bowl. Al Romano began racing when his family built and ran Pico Raceway in 1951. He ran well at Stateline, Fairmont, Mettowee and other venues.
I think have photos of Smokey Stover, Ken Delong, and Vic Smith [probably the one called Ralph in the article].
