I am trying very hard to get equal coverage for Maine on my website. However, I don't have much access to information on many of the photos I obtain, so there may be errors such as the wrong track involved - and there may be more unidentified drivers than i would prefer. I am doing everything I can to give the Pine Tree State a fair shake. If you see errors or you can help with who someone is please let me know at wladabou@comcast.net.     Thanks.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SPEEDWAY
Cherryfield Park
Cherryfield, Maine

Historic Aerials.Com Photo
Washington County Speedway is often confused with the track shown below, but the town of Washington [below] is not in the county of
the same name. Cherryfield is best known - at least in racing - as the home of Andy Santerre. This was another track that
ran only in the 1950's. The Ellsworth [or Graham Lake] track, opening nearby after this one was closed, must have served many of

the same teams and fans. This is a 1951 view.

WASHINGTON RACEWAY
Razorville, Maine

Historic Aerials.Com Photo
Washington Raceway is one of 25 race tracks which operated in Maine at one time or another and, like most, was in operation for only a brief period in the 1950's. Owned and built by Clifton Brann in 1952, the half-mile dirt track was located in Razorville, Maine in Knox County and was closed following the 1954 season. Washington Raceway was the first track in Maine to install lights and to have races at night. The following article appeared in the Kennebec-Journal newspaper in August 29, 1992 courtesy of Tony Brann, son of the track founder.

He must have been a spectator -
although, in those days, you
never knew for sure.

The Lost Maine Speedways page seems to have infornation that suggest this venue ran some sort of racing into the 1970's, unless there were two different tracks in the immediate area. Everything I had read until I started looking at Lost Maine Speedways had suggested racing ended in the 1950's, but one photo of supposed old Washington cars sure looks like the '70's to me.

WATERVILLE - OAKLAND  RACEWAY
Waterville, Maine

Historic Aerials.com
One possible aerial of the track from 1959. Below - They show what it looks like after all traces have been wiped out by a marina.

Historic Aerials.com

Here's what the fine folks at Maine Vintage Race Car Association had to say about the track : " The Waterville-Oakland Raceway officially opened on Sunday afternoon, September 17, 1950. Leon Baker won the opening day feature race. A one-third mile dirt oval, many of the top drivers who raced in the central Maine area competed at Waterville-Oakland, including Russ Longley, Dick Burgess, George Silva and others. Located in Oakland, the track had much promise but the raceway closed forever after one full season in 1951. The track's future may have been doomed from the start - a half-hour before its official opening, the grandstands collapsed injuring two spectators.  A marine and RV sales business now sits on the site of the track."

WISCASSET SPEEDWAY [Raceway]
Lincoln County Speedway / Superior Speedway

Wiscasset, Maine

Wiscassett Site Photo
A later aerial photo. The track is not as old as many others, so it won't be too early.

The Maine Vintage Race Car Association site says: "WWiscasset Raceway (Speedway) was built by Wilfred Cronk only a couple miles west of the Town of Wiscasset. From the moment the track opened in 1971, Wiscasset Raceway was billed as the "fastest track in the state". A one-third mile asphalt oval, Wiscasset had the most banking in the turns of any other track in Maine." The fortunes of the track have risen and fallen over the years, but it has hung in there for decades.
