Right From the Beginning

In early racing in areas such as Maine and Northern Vermont, racers seemed to prefer the relative safety and extra weight of the sedan over the coupe. This could also be because most local racing in the late 1940's was conducted more like a motorized form of roller derby than with any finesse. Many of these early steamrollers had exterior cages - if they had any at all. Sedans were relatively rare compared to coupes. I estimate I scan through 60 or 70 photos for each one sedan shot.

In later racing - around the middle to late 1960's builders began to make much better race cars; and those included sedans. There was a period in this time when there was a trend on dirt tracks to actually prefer sedans, in some cases. Will Cagle had built some superior coaches that could dominate at places like Lebanon Valley and Devil's Bowl. His cars were bought and resold over and over again due to the esteem with which they were held. Another noteworthy source of great sedans was the bunch around Agawam, MA fronted by Rene Charland. Fred Rosner and Godfrey Wentzel were behind several fabulous sedans. Sedans were relatively rare compared to coupes. I estimate I scan through 60 or 70 photos for each one sedan shot.

I left it just way it was - perfect. Talk about capturing all that was fun about early racing ! Don't know if Glen Estes is the name of the track,
the photographer, or what. The driver was obviously Neil. There is a Glen Este track near Cincinnati, Ohio.
