SIMONS EXCAVATING #9 TEAM |
I never got
to see much of the Simons Excavating 9, sseing as they operated pretty far from
where I could mange to get to races in my youth. One time, I got a ride to a
particular show at Lebanon Valley, and one of the cars there was driven by Dizzy
Delisle. It turns out that htis was the Simons entry. I think competition on
dirt was not
common for the team, as most photos of Simons cars are on pavement, at places in
Connecticut. But the car was certainly up to the task that night.
There are many teams which hired top shelf drivers - teams such as Frank Trinkhaus' Frank's Speed Shop 62NY and those famous red and while cars of Henry Caputo And Chris Drellos. Another one that comes to mind is the orange Turner stable made famous by Dutch Hoag. But, arguably, Simons hired more of these top shoes than almost any other team. [However, I may have to look at those Garuti's]

Charlie Webster was at least one of the first
drivers hired by the team. This car seems to be of an earlier era than most of
the others I have seen so far.

Ray Delisle apparently drove the car
on both surfaces during his tenure.

Wild Bill Scrivener with another car of that
era. I am not sure if he was before, after - during the Delisle era.

Hank Stevens also drove the same style of Simons car
as Delisle and Scrivener.

Veteran Don Collins seems to be in the next
generation of Simons car.

Ronnie Wyckoff took a turn with what looks like a car
similar ot that of Collins.

The legendary Gene Bergin may have possibly replaced
either Collins or Wyckoff given that his name seems to be taped over someone
else's.

Dick Caso looks to be a lowered version of the
cars immediately above. Hence, he likely followed those drivers.
