Carl on
the track in 1970 (added 3/19/07)
This is the same car shown
in the photos above. Carl and his crew built and ran it from 1969-71. It
was at this time that the open wheel coupes were being replaced with a
more "late model" full bodied style of car. The open wheel coupes were
still allowed to run against the newer full bodied cars up until coupes
were completely phased out. This car was destroyed after heavy impact with
a wall in 1971, as shown on below.
Pit crew member Tommy Kimball rushes to check the damage.
Carl is shown exiting the
car after the hard hit.
Track safety crew members
arrive on the scene. The car was done for the year.

A
closer look at the car
Carl went back to an open
wheel car for his last season, 1973. The car, shown here at an opening
day practice session, was co-owned by Carl and Bud Hall. The chassis was
purchased from Dick Wolstenhulme.
Here's Carl winning for one
of the last times. It was shortly after this that Carl retired from
racing.
Here's a rough photo of
Carl involved in a spin during the 1973 season. It looks as if everyone is
taking evasive action to avoid wrecking. I like this photo because it
shows so many different styles of open-wheel race cars that ran at that
time.
