A True
Renaissance Man:
Stock Car Driver, Sign Painter, and Photographer
I always knew about Chuck Ely. At
the risk of sounding like I am rhyming too much, I had come to root for Butch
Jelley - and it turned out that Butch's sister, Joanne was married to Chuck Ely.. The whole clan [including Butch's
sister who called him Clarence] came from the Pownal, Vermont area. I came to
realize that, while Butch was going big places as a driver, his brother-in-law
was living the life I actually wanted to live: being a successful race driver,
while doing commercial sign painting.
Well, I made it to the sign
painting, and I did get pretty far along in racing journalism - but that was
about it. Chuck, whom I first saw at Fairmont with an elaborately - lettered
1955 Chevy hobby car called "B.C.", went onto also be a good photographer, along
with the other talents. It wouldn't have surprised me if he also played a violin
in some symphony orchestra or cooked with Emeril. I have gotten to know some
people from Chuck's inner circle - he was an amazing guy !
