Two Shots of the Opening Day Feature Lineup Memorial Day, 1962

The crowd of thousands, having baked in a terrible hot sun for better than four hours, awaits the sending off of Fairmont's first feature. Bob Hoffer's
Thunderbird was deputized as the pace car for the day. Hoffer was likely in the race, as a driver himself. The cars were well ready; likely, the
stressed - out handicapper and scorers were not.

Folksy Bill Barsalow [right], the track announcer [and an experienced auctioneer] talked the crowd through that hot, slow first program on May 30, 1962.

A high handicap heat lines up in the 1962 season at Fairmont Speedway: 13, Buddy Bardwell [the second car he ran that year]; 33 Art Cody [in front of 13];
33 1/3 Red Smith; and, on the outside of Cody - Ed Baker's 6 PACK.

From Dan Ody's 8MM Old Speedways DVD's
A typical 1962 lineup comes out of the infield pits. P61 was Bob Loomis; 61 John Ballantine: Bob Boy's 535 was behind Loomis; and
the others are unrecognizable. Vern Hall may be back a few rows, to the far right.

I made this photo larger so you could make out the Jud Cenete car in the woods, off the track.
